Why am I in SPACE? Well, I started off being in Staff Support Winter Quarter ‘10 (now known as the SPACE Internship). I really had no idea what I was getting myself into, other than going to high schools and assisting kids with college access. My first time at site, I met one student who I was drawn to because of his energetic personality. I helped him with English homework and we played the “quiet” game that would help him reach his goal of completing his assignment. To my surprise, he was determined to win and did not speak at all. I, in turn, lost a couple of seconds after starting the game. By the end of site, he was 3/4ths away from completing his goal! Aside from his energetic personality, I saw a focus and drive in him that made me think, this kid’s got potential. The students at site truly make my experience with SPACE worthwhile.  Every time you go to site you meet new students or returning students and each time they as well as myself learn something newWhat you truly get out of site is the fact that you are helping a student that would otherwise have a hard time finding valuable resources.

Being in SPACE teaches you how to be selfless and empathetic—and that’s something you can’t buy or research but something you must experience for yourself.
